AC Not Cooling? 10 Reasons Why (And What You Can Check Before Calling a Technician)

It's the most frustrating AC complaint there is: the unit is on, the fan is running, but the room just won't cool down. Before you assume the worst (a dead compressor) or the most expensive fix (a full gas refill), it helps to know what's actually going on inside your unit.

At Patel Refrigeration, "my AC isn't cooling" is the single most common call we get in Mumbai, especially between March and June. In 25+ years of service calls, we've found that a large share of these cases come down to a short list of repeatable causes. Here's what to check before you call for a repair — and when to stop DIY-ing and get a professional in.

1. Dirty or clogged air filters

This is the single most common cause of weak cooling, and the easiest to fix yourself. A filter clogged with Mumbai's dust and monsoon humidity restricts airflow over the cooling coil, so the air coming out feels warm even though the AC is working hard. Pull out the filter, rinse it under running water, dry it fully, and reinsert it. Do this every 2–3 weeks during peak season.

2. Low refrigerant (gas) levels

If your AC blows air that's only slightly cool, or you notice ice forming on the copper pipes near the outdoor unit, low refrigerant is a likely cause. Refrigerant doesn't "run out" on its own — a drop almost always means a leak somewhere in the line. This isn't a DIY fix; it needs a certified technician to locate the leak, seal it, and recharge the gas to the correct level.

3. Dirty outdoor condenser unit

The outdoor unit needs clear airflow to release the heat it pulls out of your room. If it's covered in dust, leaves, or is boxed in too close to a wall, it can't dissipate heat efficiently, and cooling suffers. A simple check: is there at least 18–24 inches of open space around the outdoor unit? If not, that's step one.

4. Wrong AC size for the room

An undersized AC will run constantly and still struggle to cool a large room, especially in Mumbai's humidity. If your AC has always struggled — not just recently — the issue may not be a fault at all, but a capacity mismatch. Our team does a quick heat-load check on installation visits precisely to avoid this.

5. Thermostat or sensor issues

Sometimes the AC is cooling just fine — the thermostat is just misreading the room temperature and cycling off too early. This is more common in older units and shows up as short cooling bursts followed by long idle periods.

6. Blocked or leaking drain line

A clogged drain pipe won't stop cooling directly, but it can trigger auto shut-off in many modern units as a safety measure, and it's often mistaken for a cooling failure. If you're seeing water pooling near the indoor unit alongside weak cooling, this is likely the cause.

7. Faulty compressor

This is the one everyone fears, and thankfully the least common cause. If the outdoor unit is running but you hear unusual noises (humming without starting, clicking, or grinding) and there's genuinely no cooling at all, the compressor may need professional diagnosis. This is not a filter-clean fix.

8. Old or inefficient unit

If your AC is 10+ years old and repairs are becoming frequent, reduced cooling capacity may simply be age catching up with the unit — coils and compressors lose efficiency over time. At this stage, it's worth asking a technician for an honest repair-vs-replace opinion rather than repeatedly patching it.

9. Electrical supply or voltage fluctuation

Mumbai's power supply, especially during monsoon, can fluctuate. Voltage drops can cause the compressor to underperform or trip out for safety. If cooling issues correlate with specific times of day or weather, this is worth investigating.

10. Overdue servicing

Sometimes there's no single dramatic fault — just a build-up of small inefficiencies from skipping the annual service. Coils accumulate dust, gas pressure drifts slightly, and airflow drops bit by bit until you notice it as "the AC isn't cooling like it used to."

Bottom line: if you've cleaned the filter and cleared the outdoor unit's surroundings and you're still not getting cold air, it's time to stop guessing. Patel Refrigeration's technicians diagnose the exact cause on the first visit — no guesswork, no unnecessary part replacements — and give you an upfront estimate before any work begins.
