Buying a Refurbished AC? Here’s Your Essential 7-Point Inspection Checklist

When the summer heat hits, an air conditioner isn't just a luxury—it’s a necessity. But a brand-new unit can be a significant investment. For many homeowners and businesses, a refurbished AC is a smart, eco-friendly way to get premium cooling at a fraction of the cost.
However, not all "refurbished" units are created equal. To ensure you’re getting a machine that lasts, you need to look beyond the price tag. With **25+ years of experience** at Patel Refrigeration, we’ve seen it all. Here is our expert guide on what to check before you buy.
---
1. Verify the "Age of Cool"
While ACs can last 10–15 years, the "sweet spot" for a refurbished unit is **3 to 6 years**. Units older than this often use outdated technology and are less energy-efficient.
Pro Tip: Always check the manufacturing date on the nameplate of the outdoor unit.
2. Inspect the "Lifeblood": The Refrigerant
Older models often use R-22 (Freon), which is being phased out due to environmental regulations. This makes it harder and more expensive to refill if there’s a leak. Look for units using R-32 or R-410A—these are more efficient, eco-friendly, and easier to service.
3. The Copper vs. Aluminum Debate
Always insist on 100% copper coils. Copper is a better heat conductor, easier to repair, and far more resistant to corrosion compared to aluminum.
How to check: Look at the fins on the condenser (outdoor unit). If the tubes are a brownish-orange color, it's copper. If they’ve turned black, the unit has likely been poorly maintained or exposed to heavy pollution.
4. Compressor Health & Noise Levels
The compressor is the "heart" of the AC. Ask the seller to run the unit for at least 15–20 minutes.
Listen: A healthy compressor should hum steadily. Any grinding, loud rattling, or "clunking" sounds are major red flags.
Feel: Check the vibration. Excessive shaking usually indicates worn-out internal mounts or a failing motor.
5. Check the BEE Star Rating
A refurbished AC might be cheap to buy, but it could be expensive to run. Look for the BEE Star Rating sticker. In the Indian climate, a 3-star or 5-star unit will save you thousands on your monthly electricity bills compared to an unrated older model.
6. Signs of "Hidden" Damage
Don't just look at the front panel. Inspect the:
Indoor Unit (IDU):Look for water stain marks or cracks in the plastic casing which suggest past leakages or rough handling.
Filters & Vents: Check for mold or a "musty" smell. If the previous owner didn't clean the filters, the cooling coil might be choked with dust.
7. Who is the Seller?
This is the most critical check. Buying from a random individual online is a gamble. Buying from a professional firm like Patel Refrigeration ensures:
- The unit has undergone a multi-point professional overhaul.
- You get a service warranty for peace of mind.
- Expert installation (improper installation is the #1 cause of AC failure).
